Methodology: how we collect prices and estimate running costs
Every number on SaunaPlungeCosts should be checkable. Here's where it comes from.
Product prices
- Each price is the lowest configuration listed on the brand's or retailer's own website on the date shown (2026-11-01 for v1). Where a product has options (heater size, glass, colour), we use the cheapest one and say so in the row.
- Prices are list prices at the time we checked and can include temporary sales. They change often.
- Freight is shown as “Included” only when the retailer says so; otherwise “Varies”, with their policy.
- Power needs are copied from the listing. If the listing doesn't state them, we say so.
- Retailers in v1:
- Almost Heaven
- BlueCube
- Coldture
- Ice Barrel
- Penguin Chillers
- Plunge
- Polar Monkeys
- Redwood Outdoors
- Sauna Kit Co
- Sun Home
- The Cold Pod
- Universe of Comfort
- Not yet covered: Amazon, Costco, Home Depot and other big-box listings.
Electricity rates
U.S. Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (average residential price, cents/kWh), August 2026 (preliminary), read 2026-11-01 (source). August is a summer month and preliminary, and annual averages differ. Use your own bill's rate in the calculator.
Calculator and running-cost assumptions
- Traditional sauna: full heater power for the first 35 minutes, then half power for the rest of the warm-up and the session. A sauna heater runs at full power for the first 30–40 minutes, then at roughly half power to hold temperature. Harvia's example: a 6 kW heater uses 4–5 kWh in the first hour and 3–4 kWh in the second (7–9 kWh for an hour of heating plus an hour of bathing); an 8 kW heater 9–13 kWh. (Harvia). With 1 hour of warm-up and 1 hour of use, our model gives 7.75 kWh for 6 kW, inside Harvia's 7–9 kWh.
- Infrared: rated wattage × (warm-up + session). This is an upper bound. Default 1.775 kW, from a 3-person carbon infrared listing (1,775 W).
- Chiller: PlungeBox states its 500 W chiller uses about 1.4–1.8 kWh per day at 77°F room temperature with water set to 46°F. (source). We use 1.6 kWh/day by default. Penguin's 1/2 HP High Efficiency chiller is rated 450 W at 110–120V, 3.9A. (source)
- Water: EPA WaterSense's estimate of average US residential rates: $7.74 per 1,000 gallons for water plus $9.09 for wastewater, $16.83 combined. (source)
- Filters and water changes: Plunge's care guide for the residential All-In: change the filter at least monthly and the water at least every 6 months (every 1–3 months if you don't use their recommended chemicals). (source). Filter prices: Plunge filter pack (All-In / Pro Chiller), 6-pack $46.00 (source); Sun Home cold plunge filter, 3-pack $49.00 (source); Ice Barrel chiller replacement water filter, 3-pack $26.99 (source); Coldture PRO plunge lite filter (each) $40.00 (source).
- Electrical work:
- Dedicated circuit, national average: $700 (typical $570–$1,000) (Angi, 2026)
- Dedicated circuit incl. inspection: $750–$1,520 total; inspection $100–$400 (Angi, 2026)
- Panel upgrade (if needed): $1,200–$2,000 (Angi, 2026)
- 240V sauna circuit, run under 25 ft: $700–$1,200 (RenovCost)
- 240V sauna circuit, 25–75 ft: $1,200–$2,200 (RenovCost)
- 240V sauna circuit, 75 ft+ trenched: $2,200–$3,500 (RenovCost)
- Install services: Plunge infrared sauna assembly service $880 (source); Coldture PRO outdoor sauna assembly (US), electrical excluded $1,899.99 (source).
