Do you need an electrician for a sauna (or a cold plunge)?
For a traditional electric sauna, almost always yes. The heaters in our table need 240V and a dedicated breaker, and Redwood Outdoors states that “all heaters must be installed by a certified electrician.” Many infrared saunas and cold plunges plug into 120V, but they often ask for a dedicated circuit, which you may need to add.

Questions to ask the electrician
- Does my panel have space and capacity for a new 240V breaker of the size the heater needs?
- How far is the run, and does it need trenching?
- Does it need a permit and inspection where I live? (Angi puts inspection at $100–$400.)
- For a plunge: will the outlet be GFCI-protected and dedicated?
